LOIKITS – The Carbon Handling Experts!
Terminals with hydrocarbon vapor recovery equipment have come to depend on Loikits for all of their carbon needs.
We offer a wide range of carbon services that set us apart from our competition.
These services extend beyond our immediate service area to the entire continental United States.
Carbon Change-Outs
To date, Loikits has successfully completed over 100 carbon change-outs in the continental United States.
Our field experience makes us the best choice for this job. We can complete the entire project, turnkey,
saving time and money by not involving multiple contractors.
We use our own customized carbon removal equipment, specially designed with a filtration canister to control
the dust created from handling the carbon. The spent carbon is contained in super-sacs for ease of handling and disposal.
For gasoline vapor recovery units, a trained vapor service technician is the lead man on the change-out.
We can prep the VRU prior to shutting down, inspect the inside of the carbon beds and make any necessary
repairs, complete saturation of new carbon, restart the VRU and make any necessary adjustments to its operation.
Each Loikits technician has the required OSHA training, including confined space, and is equipped with the required PPE.
Carbon Sampling & Testing
Carbon sampling and testing is a quality control measure, necessary to track the condition and performance of the carbon.
It is important when sampling carbon that the sample represents the whole load and not just a portion. Our service
technicians do this by sampling the top, middle and bottom of each carbon bed. Each technician is trained and properly
equipped to provide this service.
Observations are documented during the sampling process even before lab testing begins (i.e.,
dust apparent in sample, sample probe would not penetrate the carbon, carbon appears to be compacted,
carbon level in beds are 2’ low, etc.). This information is just as important as the lab testing.
The lab test measures the Butane Working Capacity (BWC) and Dust Content of the carbon sample.
The BWC measures the ability of activated carbon to absorb and desorb under normal loading conditions.
The Dust Content is measured using seven sieve analysis trays according to the carbon’s mesh size (4x14,
6x16, etc.). Anything measuring below the smallest mesh size (14, 16, etc.) is counted as dust. Both the
BWC and Dust Content test results are reported in percentage compared to new carbon specifications.
A full written report and recommendations are provided with each test.
Carbon Sales
Loikits will only sell carbon that is both approved and used by the equipment manufacturers.
This is why we’re an authorized distributor of Calgon Carbon, a recognized performer for gasoline
vapor recovery and other chemical process applications. Our prices are very competitive and we can
ship any quantity, to any location!
Carbon Disposal
Carbon is handled one of two ways once removed from service. It is either disposed of or recycled. Many times the carbon manufacturer will take back the old carbon for recycling, as in the case of Calgon. They require the following three conditions be met: 1) The new carbon must be purchased from them,
2) The spent carbon must be a coal-based product, and, 3) The spent carbon must pass a series of analytical tests for recycling approval.
Waste disposal companies are recommended based on the geographical location of the job.
Bottom line - we are happy to answer any questions and welcome all calls regarding carbon.
